NC 10% Campaign Kicks Off in Charlotte… With a Song!

My lunch-hour shopping trip to the Atherton Mill and Market in South End began with the usual fare: I loaded up on veggies, bought a deliciously scented soy candle, enjoyed an opera performance…

Say what?

The NC 10% Campaign kicked off in Charlotte today with a song… quite literally. During the kick-off event this afternoon at the Atherton Market, one began to hear a song break through the usual lunch-hour bustle. It didn’t take long to locate the talented culprit: A woman perched atop a booth began to perform a gorgeous opera, stopping shoppers in their tracks. When she finished, a man across the market took up the tune, followed by singers — previously hidden in plain sight — throughout the market. Soon, shoppers were treated to a gorgeous impromptu opera! (Bravo to Knight Arts for the performance!)

The true star of the show, however, was the NC 10% Campaign. The 10% Campaign is building support for local foods and producers in our state: they ask you to pledge to purchase 10% of your groceries from local vendors. Please visit the NC 10% Campaign website today to join this wonderful cause! You can use the site to locate local food vendors, learn about local food events across the state, and — of course — to learn why eating locally is so important on both a global and local level. Our small shopping habits can accumulate into mass activisim: According to the NC 10% Campaign website, if we all would spend just 10% of our food budget on local foods, we would infuse about $3.5 billion into our local economies! (More information found here.)

When you register for the 10% challenge, you’ll begin to receive weekly emails that will allow you to track your shopping progress. This information will allow the campaign to track our progress as a group and to gauge our collective local purchasing power. Let’s meet this challenge and support local food! And who knows, maybe the fresh food and community spirit will inspire us all to song!
